Using JIRA without Using JIRA

I am doing a presentation at the Canberra Atlassian User Group on 13 Feb 2014 titled “JIRA Integration: Using JIRA Without Using JIRA”. This idea of this presentation is to give some insight into the the various integration points that JIRA offers and how they can be used. You can take a look at the slides here. For those of you that don’t know JIRA is a product by an Australian company called Atlassian and is primarily for bug tracking within software although people are often finding new and innovative ways to use it.

Automating Changelog/Release Notes with JIRA

I’ve been using Atlassians JIRA bug tracking tool and its really great, I like using it and it generally makes my life easier. However, one area in which I wanted a bit of extra flexibility was in producing release notes or Changelogs. The way in which my colleagues and I operate is that every development task no matter how small or large gets raised as an issue in JIRA and pushed through a standard workflow involving everything from quality assessment of the content of the issue itself to development to code review to testing and finally release.

For example www.mysite.com would actually point to a CloudFlare server that then points to your host.

Rapid Hack Development

I’ve been to a few hack days now and whilst I wouldn’t consider myself an expert I’ve certainly picked up a few pointers either from my own experience or observing how other people worked. System Design Probably the biggest mistake I have seen people make is too much thought put into the design. Take data models at GovHack for example – GovHack last 48 hours and I’ve seen people spend the first 24 designing data models.

GovHack 2012: A Day in the Life

View it Online | Fork it! Over 100 years of data, information and imagery has been captured in the many datasets available for GovHack, but how does the average person connect with this? Do they care what the rainfall was on the 1st March 1965? Do you want to browse photos from 60 years ago? Maybe, maybe not. However, every person has a nostalgic interest in the events around the time of their birth, their families births, their friends births – how has the world changed?
